FEELS LIKE YESTERDAY
FLAUNT2012 | Upcycle Downtown
FLAUNT2012 brought Thomasville to the recycle table by elevating artists who work in recycled and upcycled mediums. Thomasville Center for the Arts in partnership with Keep Thomas County Beautiful and Downtown Main Street presented this exhibition on the bricks and in Broad Street retailer spaces.
ARTIST TALK
It all started with a sweater at lunch, and the spirit of our community took over to bring joyful color to the streets. Public Art Director, Darlene Taylor, and fiber artist, Carol Singletary, weave the tale of how a small idea between two people grew into a vibrant story of fellowship in a small town.
FLAUNT2012 | Upcycle Downtown
FLAUNT2012: Upcycle Downtown brought together an entire community to explore upcycling in creative ways. The trees along our downtown shopping avenue were blanketed with art knitted from discarded yarn, while local artists created dresses for exhibition using materials from local businesses' recycling bins. The number of people who contributed to this project was astounding, and a powerful example of how public art can connect people together.
This project was made possible through the passion and work of:
28 partnering businesses
28 dress models
28 recycled dress artists
10 teen dress designers
16 quilters
12 rug hookers
50 tree project leaders
and the 300 individuals they lead to create the yarn-bomb.
From our partner, Keep Thomas County Beautiful
"Upcycle Downtown provided an opportunity for our local businesses to consider the impact their business processes have on the environment by looking at the type and quantity of waste they produce. The increased awareness led to meaningful conversations on how internal processes can be modified to reduce waste and possibly create new revenue streams. Keep Thomas County Beautiful had the opportunity to share our mission of reducing waster and protecting our local environment." Pam Schalk
